NEPCO elongates electricity supply deal with Iraq for twelve months

(MENAFN) The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) announced on Sunday that it has extended its electricity supply agreement with Iraq for an additional year to strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries.

The decision was made during a meeting in Amman between NEPCO Director General Sufian Bataineh and Riyadh Areibi, Director General of Iraq’s General Company for Electric Power Transmission/Central Region, along with his delegation. The extension, requested by Iraq, will ensure continued electricity supply to the Rutbah area until September 27, 2025, or until the 400 kV Jordan-Iraq electricity interconnection line becomes fully operational.

Bataineh emphasized Jordan’s readiness to operate the new line from the Risha substation and noted that the 400 kV interconnection is a preparatory step toward synchronizing the electricity grids of Jordan and Iraq. The project aims to enhance energy supply security, stabilize both countries’ power networks, and deepen bilateral cooperation. The Iraqi delegation expects to complete technical work on the interconnection within six months, paving the way for full 400 kV operation.
